McKee Assistive Technology Center
The Robert E. and Evelyn McKee Computer Technology Evaluation
and Training Center offers individuals the opportunity to work
with the latest versions of windows. Along with assistive
technology to help with computer access, individuals can enjoy
their computer learning experience.
Training is offered to people with visual disabilities TO
HELP THEM BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE PROGRAMS THAT THE GENERAL
PUBLIC USE IN DAY TO DAY OPERATIONS OF BUSINESS. The GOAL IS
TO TRAIN THEM SO THAT THEY MAY BE EMPLOYED ALONG SIDE PEOPLE
WITHOUT DISABILITIES.
The following items are the types of assistive
technology that can be taught by the technology trainer
- Braille Output Devices
These devices can be used in place of
large print or speech. They show the person what words
are on the screen by producing braille dots on the braille
output area.
- Note-taking devices
These devices are used by people with
low vision or who are totally blind to store numbers, address,
appointments, to write letters or simply to jot down
information they may need at a later time. They are
similar to laptop computers, but are much smaller and have
built in speech and or braille capabilities.
- Screen Reading Software
These are computer software programs
that allow people who are totally blind to access a computer
and be able to use the same programs sighted people use on a
day-to-day basis.
- Screen Magnification Software
These computer programs allow a person
with low vision to be able to to see the computer screen by
enlargeing the computer program to a size suitable for the
individual. Some of the magnification programs also have
a speech component giving the person the best of both worlds.
- Text to Speech Software
These computer programs allow a person
with low vision or who is totally blind the option of hearing
what is on a printed sheet of paper by scanning what is on the
paper and having it read back to them by the computer.
