Brown-McAfee-Smith Elderly Blind Program
Specifically designed to assist the elderly, as well as
individuals who are blind or legally blind and unable to work.
The goals of the program are:
- To identify people (generally in age category 55 years &
older) who are legally or totally blind and are having
adjustment problems with the sighted world.
- To serve people (generally in this age category) who have a
progressive deterioration of their vision and are in need of
training services.
- To assess the individual's problems through intake and
observation processes
- To provide an individual program plan devised to provide
adjustment services depending on individual needs.
Training provided through this Program includes:
- Personal Management - bathroom tasks; clothing
identification/care and
repair, washing/ironing/organizing; and elements of personal
grooming.
- Indoor Mobility - See Orientation and Mobility Skills
Training
- Sensory Development - Training in visualization, eye
contact, sound
localization, turn judgment, maps, facial vision, indoor
discrimination
- Homemaking Skills - See Independent Living Skills Training
- Transportation - See Orientation and Mobility Skills
Training
- Occupational Therapy - A limited amount of training in arts
and crafts; access to the Resource Center Library
- Public Information - Provision of radio receiver units that
enable the
individual to listen to the El Paso Lighthouse Radio Reading
Service
- Information and Referral - Introducing clients to social
services, peer
groups, nutrition centers, volunteer work, social and
productive pursuits
